SATISH SINHA

(1893-1965)
Born in Calcutta in 1893, Satish Sinha was an important painter of the Orientalist era He joined the Government College of Art in 1912 where he studied under Jamini Prakash Ganguly and Percy Brown for three years.
He would later go on to also train under revered artist Hemendranath Mazumdar Due to his father’s untimely demise and financial constraints that followed, he took a break from pursuing his passion for art and worked as both a stock broker and insurance
Despite this detour, he continued to take out time to continue learning his craft He went on to teach at Government College of Art and also serve as the principal of Indian College of Art and Draughtsmanship
Sinha is known for his plethora of works in Western academic and realist styles He focused primarily on the female form, depicting graceful women who were often shown performing daily tasks He is also renowned for his command over light and shadows
The artist passed away in 1965.
